Have you ever noticed technology in a movie or television show that eventually found a market in the real world? I’m sure that we can all think of at least one example where something that was once nothing more than science fiction actually became a real invention. After all, nowadays this type of innovation seems to happen quite frequently. If you need any proof of this, just look at some of the examples in the following infographic.

With examples from Star Trek, Minority Report, 2001: A Space Odyssey and other notable sci-fi movies and television shows, it’s clear that technology is frequently informed by the stories that we tell. Of course, sometimes it is also the innovative new technologies that we see around us which inform our fantastical stories of the future, and there are at least a few examples of that here as well.

With a history that spans back over a century, chances are that you can come up with something unique and interesting from the annals of sci-fi. What will science fiction do for technology or vice versa in the near future?
